Vice President JD Vance identified the Iran conflict as a primary driver of the Republican defeat in the 2026 midterm elections.

In a social media post published on Wednesday, Vance detailed feedback from a pollster who surveyed voters who switched to Democrats. He stated that four responses accounted for nearly all of the feedback from disaffected Republicans.

The top reasons cited by voters were to end the war, address the cost of living and inflation, prioritize America, and adjust the relationship with Israel. Vance noted that these four factors explain why many Republicans voted for Democratic candidates despite showing up to vote.

President Donald Trump offered a similar assessment in an interview with The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday night. He described the war against Iran as part of the reason for the GOP losses, which included Democratic flips of Senate seats in Texas and Kansas. Trump said he would have done it again and did not regret starting the war.

Vance went further than the president in his public commentary. He attributed the argument to Trump, stating that the president himself said last night that the war was the reason for the loss. Vance added that if voters believe losing the Senate for the next six years was a worthwhile cost to pay, they should argue that point honestly.

Exit polls indicated that foreign policy and the Iran war were key issues for voters on Tuesday. The conflict has caused nationwide spikes in gasoline and diesel prices, which have lowered the president’s approval rating on the economy.

Vance, who has described himself as a foreign policy realist, was a lead negotiator in peace talks with Iran. He sent a letter to the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council in October to restart negotiations, according to The Wall Street Journal. His assessment contrasts with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who placed the blame squarely on Trump for running against a Middle East war and then starting one.
