House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries declared to a crowd in Washington, D.C., that America is back. He told supporters his party will deliver transformational change once Democrats take control of Congress in January.
Jeffries is positioned to become the first Black House speaker in history. He argued that voters sent a clear message to Republican-led Washington that they are finished with political extremism and corruption. The New York Democrat plans to prioritize affordability immediately after taking office.
His legislative agenda includes improving access to affordable housing, education, healthcare, and retirement benefits. Jeffries stated, We're going to fight to make sure that we make this country affordable for every single American. He characterized the election as a change election, noting that things are broken and that Congress must put the American people first.
Tuesday's midterm results ended the era of a fully Republican-controlled Washington. Voter anger over the economy, the Iran war, and the cost of living fueled the Democratic surge. President Trump will no longer rely on a GOP-led Congress to set the agenda. Instead, the new divided capital accelerates his lame duck status.
House Speaker Mike Johnson addressed supporters in Shreveport, Louisiana, acknowledging the results. He described the election as a grand experiment of democracy not controlled by a king or monarch. Johnson said he left it all on the field to retain control of the lower chamber despite unfavorable odds.
Johnson noted, From the first day of this election, we knew that to keep the House and sustain our majority we'd have to defy more than a century of midterm history. He added that history will be kept tonight. Jeffries acknowledged that Democrats faced a significant financial deficit, with Republicans outspending his party across the country.
Jeffries said voters demonstrated they are not for sale. The party plans to ferret out corruption, bringing accountability to those who have visited unprecedented corruption on the country. He warned that leaders focused on enriching themselves, their families, or their donors are not focused on making life better for the American people.
