Lincoln Riley departed the press conference at the Coliseum holding a sheet of prepared notes, a departure from his usual demeanor following the USC Trojans’ 30-18 defeat of the second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday night. The 7-2 Trojans (4-2 in the Big Ten) secured a decisive win that kept their College Football Playoff hopes alive, but the head coach’s final words focused as much on his standing as on the result.

The game featured a 69-yard touchdown pass to Trent Mosley on the second play from scrimmage, establishing early momentum for the home team. Ohio State relied on field goals for much of the contest, struggling offensively against a USC defense that had faced criticism earlier in the season. The Buckeyes were held to three field goals in total, while the Trojans managed the clock and the scoreboard effectively throughout the four quarters.

Riley maintained a composed exterior for the majority of the session. He answered questions regarding the team’s performance with brevity, avoiding the defensive posture that had characterized his interactions with reporters after the recent loss to Wisconsin. The change in tone occurred near the end of the event when a team publicist signaled that the group was being excused to leave.

Riley pulled out his notes and told the room he had one other thing to say. He stated that he wanted to ensure he articulated his thoughts correctly before speaking. "This program is built on internal joy, not external applause," Riley said. He directed the credit for the victory to the staff, players, and administrative personnel within the university walls.

The coach emphasized his belief in his own suitability for the position. "I said before this game that I’m the right person for this job and as long as all those people know that, that’s all I care about," Riley stated. He concluded by thanking the university and affirming his commitment to the Trojan identity, saying he would continue to fight on.

The stakes for the upcoming schedule are high. The Trojans face road games against Indiana and UCLA. A loss to either opponent would eliminate the team from playoff contention. Such a result would return Riley to the same position of uncertainty he occupied before the Saturday victory, given the team’s historical struggles playing away from the Coliseum.

Defensive tackle Alex VanSumeren attributed the team’s ability to stop Ohio State at the goal line to toughness and mindset. "That’s a grit play, that’s a toughness deal, a mindset thing," VanSumeren said. The defensive stand prevented the Buckeyes from scoring a touchdown on a critical first and goal situation, limiting them to another field goal.
