With the Fighting Irish at No. 11 and their season on the line, Carr must exploit Miami's porous secondary to secure a playoff spot and boost his draft stock.

Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr enters Saturday's game against No. 1 Miami needing a win to keep the Fighting Irish's College Football Playoff bid alive. The selection committee ranked the Irish at No. 11 on Tuesday, placing them on the bubble as the projected final team to make the cut. A loss to the Hurricanes would likely end Notre Dame's postseason hopes, repeating the pain of being the final team eliminated last season.
The Irish currently hold a 10-3 record with a single defeat to No. 9 BYU. That contest in Provo exposed vulnerabilities in Carr's performance. He completed only 55% of his passes, going 27-for-49, which was his lowest career completion percentage. He managed just 7 of 17 passes during a difficult stretch in the second and third quarters, allowing the Cougars to build a double-digit lead.
Carr's efficiency has dropped against ranked opponents compared to unranked teams. He completes 61% of his passes for 6.6 yards per attempt against ranked foes, whereas he achieves a 69% completion rate and 10.0 yards per attempt against unranked opponents. His volume also increases significantly, averaging 33 pass attempts in ranked games compared to 23.1 in unranked contests. This trend suggests the offense relies heavily on the pass when the run game stalls.
The Miami Hurricanes present a unique opportunity despite their elite status. While they possess the No. 1 rushing defense in the nation, their secondary ranks No. 122 in passing defense. Miami allows 251.9 yards per game and has surrendered 7.1 yards per attempt. Recent opponents have exploited this weakness, with North Carolina's Billy Edwards Jr. throwing for 341 yards and four touchdowns last week. Florida State and Pittsburgh quarterbacks also combined for substantial yardage against the Hurricanes recently.
Carr, currently rated the No. 10 overall prospect in the CBS Sports NFL Draft Rankings, has a 67% career completion rate and an 18-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. A strong performance against Miami could position him as the first Notre Dame quarterback to be selected in the first round since Brady Quinn in 2007. He would also become the first top-10 pick at the position since Rick Mirer in 1993.
The Irish have gone 17-3 over the past two seasons, but Carr went 0-2 against College Football Playoff teams last season. He is 0-1 against projected playoff participant BYU this year. The outcome of Saturday's matchup will determine whether Notre Dame advances to the postseason and will influence Carr's trajectory in the upcoming NFL draft.
