Elena Rybakina reached the Ningbo Open final on Saturday, defeating Russia's Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5 in a semifinal marked by long service games and momentum swings. The world number one will face unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez on Sunday at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre. Rybakina, the defending champion, is seeking her second consecutive title at this event.

Rybakina, who holds Australian Open and US Open titles, arrived in Ningbo following a heavy loss in Beijing and a withdrawal from Wuhan due to a foot injury. Against the 13th-ranked Shnaider, she broke early but dropped her level before closing the first set on her 11th set point. "It was an important game, and it was a long one," Rybakina said. "It was on my serve, and it was a struggle … I was playing the first balls really well, but I couldn't close the game … so many opportunities, but I'm glad it went my way. She played some great shots and great rallies."

The second set mirrored the first. The 27-year-old broke to lead 4-3, was broken to love in the 10th game, then broke back and served out the match. Rybakina cited difficulty with her first-serve accuracy and the challenge of facing a left-handed opponent. "We don't have so many on the tour," she said. "I needed some time. The returns were not as bad, but during the rallies, to switch the pattern was a little bit of an issue for me, but I'm happy I managed to win in two sets."

Fernandez secured the other final spot by beating Czech Marie Bouzkova 6-3, 7-5 in the first semifinal. Fernandez also plays left-handed, presenting Rybakina with a similar tactical problem on Sunday. The winner will collect the trophy before Rybakina turns to the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week, then begins her WTA Finals title defense at Indian Wells from November 8. "It's never easy," Rybakina said of a potential back-to-back Ningbo run. "Of course I'll try to do my best. I'm going to fight and give my all tomorrow."
