The Central Valley basketball landscape has shifted again as one of its most prominent talents makes a decision to remain close to home. Ryleigh Schoonover is set to begin her collegiate career with Fresno State, bringing with her the intense habits and competitive edge forged during her high school years.
The former star for the Clovis West Golden Eagles enters her freshman season as a key member of a highly regarded recruiting class. Her presence adds depth to a women's program that is looking to make significant strides in the coming years. By choosing to stay within the region, she maintains strong ties to the local community while stepping up to a higher level of competition.
Her decision comes on the heels of a remarkable era for her former high school team. For the past fourteen years, the Golden Eagles have captured consecutive Central Section titles. This sustained dominance has shaped the identity of the program, creating an environment where excellence is the baseline expectation rather than the exception.
Coach Craig Campbell, who guided Schoonover through those championship seasons, emphasized that the focus is on consistent performance over guaranteed results. He noted that while winning every single year is not the primary objective, the team aims to remain competitive and push for the top spot in every campaign. This philosophy of relentless pursuit has clearly left a mark on the players who have worn the uniform.
Schoonover expressed a deep personal connection to the Fresno State uniform, specifically highlighting the symbolic weight of the valley letter on her chest. She noted that this aspect of the team identity is often overlooked by observers from outside the region. For her, representing the area in this way carries a unique significance that extends beyond simple geography.
New Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy has already identified Schoonover as a standout talent within her recruiting class. He stated that she is, in his view, the top player from the local area for the 2026 group. McCarthy pointed out that she did not take long to demonstrate her abilities during her initial period with the program, validating his early impressions of her potential.
Transitioning from a high school environment defined by constant victory to a collegiate setting requires a specific mindset. Schoonover credited her high school coach for instilling a standard of excellence that she now carries into the Pac-12. She observed that the expectation of doing things correctly is universal, regardless of the level of play, and she feels prepared for the demands of McCarthy's system.
The incoming coach agrees that her background in a winning culture gives her a distinct advantage. He explained that playing in a program that consistently delivered titles created a natural expectation for success. Consequently, when she steps onto the court in college, that same drive and confidence are already embedded in her approach to the game.
The practical test of her preparation is fast approaching. The Bulldogs will open their season in less than two weeks against UC Merced. This matchup will mark Schoonover's first official appearance at the Save Mart Center, providing an immediate opportunity to showcase her skills in front of a home crowd.
Campbell remains optimistic about the long-term trajectory of his former player. He believes that Schoonover is currently only beginning to tap into her full potential. The coaching staff at Fresno State is excited by the possibility of her continued growth, viewing her current performance as just the initial phase of what she can achieve in the program.
