Demond Williams Jr. entered the game in the fourth quarter to change the outcome for the Washington Huskies. The backup quarterback replaced Elijah Brown early in the final period, taking over an offense that had struggled to gain ground. Under Williams' direction, the team moved the ball downfield and secured a 17-10 victory over Nebraska on Saturday night in Lincoln, Neb.
The Huskies, who improved to a 5-3 record, punted on eight of their first nine possessions. The offense stalled for much of the contest, with the only previous score being a 24-yard touchdown pass to Carter Nelson late in the first quarter. That early lead proved fragile as Nebraska's defense applied consistent pressure throughout the first three quarters.
Williams' arrival shifted the momentum. On fourth and 18, he threw a 24-yard pass to Chris Lawson, who caught the ball while falling backward. Two plays later, Williams connected with Lawson again on a short sideline pass. Lawson used a quick move to separate from Dwayne McDougle III and sprinted into the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown. The score gave Washington their first lead of the game with 1:30 remaining.
Alex McLaughlin sealed the result with a defensive play. Nebraska quarterback Anthony Colandrea threw a pass over the middle toward tight end Luke Lindenmeyer. McLaughlin intercepted the ball and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown. Colandrea had been intercepted on back-to-back possessions to start the game, marking his third interception of the night.
Nebraska, which also sits at 5-3, attempted to rally late. John Hohl kicked a 42-yard field goal with 31 seconds left. The Huskers trailed by seven points at that moment. Washington recovered the onside kick to end the game and protect their lead.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Washington. The Huskies are now 2-3 in Big Ten play. Nebraska has lost three consecutive games, with a combined point differential of 13 across those contests. The Cornhuskers are also 2-3 in conference play.
Washington will host Penn State on Saturday in its next scheduled game. Nebraska travels to Illinois on Friday night for its upcoming matchup.
