Terry Williams, a Vermont state senator, was taken into custody on Tuesday for alleged domestic assault.

The 74-year-old Republican from Poultney is currently seeking a third term in the state legislature. He was booked at the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility in Rutland. Vermont State Police set his bail at $500. An arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

State police indicated they received a report Tuesday afternoon regarding the incident. The report stated that Williams allegedly caused pain and injury to a household member on Monday. Officials provided limited details about the specific circumstances of the arrest. Williams has not been reached for comment as of Wednesday, and it is unknown if he has hired an attorney.

Williams previously worked as an automotive technician and a game warden. He also served in the Vermont National Guard. He was first elected to the state senate in 2022. He is one of three Republicans representing Rutland County. All three incumbents are seeking reelection in the upcoming general election.

Republican Governor Phil Scott reacted to the news through his spokesperson, Amanda Wheeler. She described the governor as completely surprised and troubled by the arrest. Wheeler stated that Scott takes domestic violence seriously and has no tolerance for such behavior. The governor plans to assess the situation further once he receives additional details.

Senate leaders from both parties are monitoring the case. Senator Scott Beck, the Republican minority leader, said his caucus is aware of the matter but is waiting for more information before commenting. Senator Kesha Ram Hinsdale, the Democratic majority leader, said her party is troubled and concerned. She also noted that Democrats are awaiting more details.

The race for Williams's seat includes a lone independent candidate, David Wolk. Wolk is a former Democratic state senator, education commissioner, and university president. He declined to comment on the arrest. If Williams drops out, his name remains on the ballot, and he can still win the election. Early voting began in September, and mailed ballots have been sent to all registered voters. If Williams resigns, either immediately or upon starting a new term in January, the governor will select a replacement from a list provided by the local party. Republicans currently hold 13 of the 30 seats in the Vermont Senate.
