JuJu Watkins scored 21 points on Monday as Southern California defeated UNLV by a score of 100-68. The performance marked her return to the court after an anterior cruciate ligament injury kept her out of action for the entirety of the previous season. The Trojans extended their halftime lead of 13 points into a 34-point margin by the final buzzer.
Watkins played 25 minutes in the contest. She recorded five rebounds and two assists while shooting 9-for-22 from the field. Her scoring output included 11 points during the third quarter, a period when the gap between the teams widened substantially. She did not appear in the post-game media availability following the victory.
The guard suffered the injury during the NCAA Tournament last year. She remained with the team throughout the recovery period, observing practice and supporting her peers. Sophomore Jazzy Davidson noted that Watkins served as a mentor during that time. Davidson described the effort Watkins put into her rehabilitation as a key factor in her readiness.
USC head coach Lindsay Gottlieb stated that the team is carefully managing Watkins' workload. The coaching staff is restricting her minutes to allow her physical condition to develop through competitive play. Gottlieb described Watkins as physically explosive and indicated that her timing will improve as she finds rhythm.
The offensive balance of the team shifted with Watkins on the floor. Davidson contributed 23 points, while freshman Saniyah Hall added 22. The scoring distribution demonstrated the multiple threats available to the Trojans when their star guard is active. The team's defense held UNLV to 68 points in the first half of the season.
Gottlieb indicated that Watkins will become more comfortable as the season continues. The coach emphasized that the team's performance improves with Watkins participating in games. The victory serves as a baseline for the squad as they integrate their key player back into the rotation.
