The Stony Brook University Seawolves eliminated the Northeastern Huskies from the Colonial Athletic Association playoff picture with a 2-0 victory on Oct. 25. The result ended Northeastern's regular season at 5-8-3 overall and 3-4-1 in conference play. Stony Brook improved to 7-3-5 overall and 4-3-1 in the CAA. The win guaranteed the Seawolves a berth in the postseason tournament.

Stony Brook controlled the tempo through disciplined defense and efficient counterattacks. The teams exchanged early chances without finding the net. In the third minute, Northeastern sophomore Nicole Bartlett crossed the ball for freshman Scarlett Baur. Baur headed the ball toward goal, but Stony Brook senior goalkeeper Jona Hennings made the save. The Huskies failed to capitalize on their initial pressure.

The first goal came from a set piece rather than open play. In the 27th minute, Stony Brook sophomore Emily Lemke won a penalty kick after being tripped by Northeastern defender Jannah Pierce. Lemke struck the ball into the top right corner of the net. Northeastern goalkeeper Eliza Teplow dove to the left, leaving the right side open. The goal gave Stony Brook a 1-0 lead and marked Lemke's seventh goal of the season.

Northeastern attempted to respond in the opening minutes of the second half. The Huskies increased their presence in the attacking third, but Stony Brook maintained defensive shape. In the 42nd minute, junior forward Foluke Balogun received a pass in the box from Bartlett. Balogun attempted a shot on goal, but the ball sailed over the crossbar. The miss remained the Huskies' best chance of the first half.

Statistics from the first half showed a balanced contest despite the scoreline. Stony Brook held 52% of the possession. The Seawolves registered three shots on goal compared to one for Northeastern. The Huskies committed nine fouls in the first 45 minutes, while Stony Brook had seven. Four yellow cards were shown to Northeastern players during this period.

The decisive moment occurred in the 83rd minute. Northeastern freshman defender Lisa Muller was in the top left corner of the box when she collided with Balogun. The referee awarded a second penalty kick to Stony Brook. Muller struck the ball to the right side of the goal. Teplow dropped to her left again, allowing the ball to enter the net. The goal extended the Stony Brook lead to 2-0 and clinched the playoff berth.

Northeastern struggled to sustain momentum in the final 10 minutes. The Huskies' attacks slowed as the game clock expired. Stony Brook protected the lead without conceding further goals. The final score remained 2-0. Northeastern's season concluded with the loss, leaving their playoff hopes in the balance for the final regular season match.

The Huskies will host Monmouth University on Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. Monmouth currently holds a 7-4-5 record overall and a 2-3-3 record in the CAA. A victory would allow Northeastern to contest for a remaining playoff spot. The game represents the final regular season fixture for the Huskies.
