Ernie Johnson will leave the 'Inside the NBA' set after the current season concludes. The 70-year-old broadcaster announced on Wednesday that he is stepping away from his long-time role. He stated the decision is entirely his own and driven by the natural progression of time.
Johnson joined the program in 1990 when it debuted on TNT and TBS. The show moved to ESPN in 2025. For nearly four decades, he served as the moderator for a panel that has included former NBA players such as Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith. He has also shared the stage with basketball legends like Magic Johnson, Reggie Miller, and Chris Webber.
The veteran host cited his age and health as primary factors in his choice. He noted that fans have frequently asked how much longer he would continue with the show. He explained that he always knew he would leave when preparation became a struggle rather than a pleasure. That point has now arrived for him.
In a video message, Johnson revealed he has managed heart issues for nearly two years. He underwent bypass surgery 14 months ago. While he believes he is trending in the right direction, he said there is still work to be done. He plans to dedicate more time to his wife of 44 years and his grandchildren.
Johnson clarified that he is not fully retiring from broadcasting. He will continue to work on March Madness and other projects for TNT and CBS. He thanked his colleagues and viewers for their support before the Wednesday night broadcast.
