The new Yalu River Bridge measures 3 kilometers in length and connects the North Korean capital to China by road. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un crossed the structure on Saturday to arrive in the Chinese border city of Dandong. The crossing marks the first time Kim has used the route since its opening in mid-October. The bridge was completed after a 12 year delay, with construction finishing on the Chinese side years before North Korea finished its portion.
The timing of the trip aligns with the October 25 anniversary of China's first major victory in the Korean War. That military success followed Chinese troops crossing the Yalu River into North Korea in October 1950. South Korea's unification ministry and China's Xinhua news agency confirmed Kim's arrival. He met with Wang Huning, a member of the standing committee of the Chinese Communist party. The two officials toured a car factory during the visit.
Xinhua reported that Kim pledged to expand practical cooperation with Beijing. He stated that North Korea stands ready to work with China to carry forward their historical friendship. Kim said the goal is to deliver tangible benefits to the peoples of both countries. Wang accompanied Kim to the bridge to see him off. The visit appears designed to signal the strength of the alliance between Pyongyang and Beijing ahead of the anniversary date.
Japan's Kyodo news agency reported that traffic controls were implemented around the bridge and near a museum dedicated to China's role in the war. Nearby hotel bookings were also restricted. Diplomatic sources told the agency that these security measures were tied to the visit by a senior North Korean official. The restrictions indicate a high level of coordination between the two governments for the event.
This road connection completes a new transportation network for Pyongyang. In early September, North Korea and Russia opened the first road bridge across their shared border. This development means North Korea is now linked by road to its two primary backers. The infrastructure changes support a strategy of deepening ties with regional powers while managing relations with its southern neighbor.
Kim's visit is his sixth to China and his first since September 2025. He attended a military parade in Beijing alongside Chinese president Xi Jinping and Russian president Vladimir Putin at that time. Xi visited Pyongyang in June for his first trip to North Korea in seven years. The frequency of high-level exchanges suggests a sustained effort to solidify the diplomatic and military alignment between the three nations.
Relations with South Korea have deteriorated recently. Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, has issued approximately 10 statements criticizing Seoul since late September. The unification ministry described this frequency as unusual. She announced plans to resume loudspeaker broadcasts at the border within days. These actions contrast with the warm reception Kim received in Dandong.
Speculation continues about a potential meeting between Kim and US president Donald Trump. Xi will host the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen on November 18 and 19. However, Reuters reported on Friday that US and South Korean officials see little chance of such a meeting occurring this year. The bridge inauguration provides a concrete example of North Korea's current focus on strengthening its position with Beijing and Moscow.
The physical link across the Yalu River now serves as both a transportation route and a diplomatic symbol. Kim's use of the bridge on the eve of the war anniversary underscores the strategic importance of the relationship. The infrastructure project, delayed for over a decade, now allows for direct road access between the two capitals. This logistical capability supports the broader goal of practical cooperation outlined by Kim in Dandong.
