Google is activating a new tier of security for its Android messaging app to combat sophisticated scams that evade on-device filters. The Enhanced Protection mode began rolling out this week, following an announcement made earlier in October. It operates alongside the existing Standard Protection, which already blocks known spam and harmful links.

The system relies on cloud-based Gemini models to evaluate the full context of a conversation with an unknown sender. Google states this method identifies scammer intent faster than local processing, specifically targeting novel and complex attacks. To address privacy concerns, the feature utilizes Android's Private AI Compute system. Messages are encrypted and processed in a secure space that remains private to the user, including from Google itself.

A second component combines the on-device Gemini Nano model with real-time web signals to vet unfamiliar links before users tap them. This enhanced link protection is currently available on the Pixel 10 and newer, the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, the Galaxy Z Flip 8, and the Z Fold 8, along with other select hardware. The update also redesigns warning alerts for unsaved numbers, providing users with more time and context to pause before interacting with a link.

Users must manually enable the feature. In the Google Messages settings under Protection & safety, the interface now lists three distinct options. Enhanced protection sits above Standard protection. The third choice, labeled No protection, is marked as not recommended. The setting was identified in the latest Google Messages beta, version 20261020_00_RC00.
