Apple iPhone Duo sidebar consumes 15 percent of 5.4-inch cover display

Early user reviews indicate that the device's fixed right-hand dock creates a larger unusable area than the gesture-based navigation on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.

The iPhone Duo, which is currently in limited availability, features a fixed sidebar that occupies 15 percent of its 5.4-inch outer display. This design choice leaves a substantial portion of the small screen unused, according to early user feedback and comparative reviews.

First, the device presents a usability challenge for single-handed operation. Allison Johnson, writing for The Verge, noted that the iPhone Duo is harder to use with one hand than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8. The Fold 8 has a taller and narrower physical profile, which allows for easier navigation of its cover screen. This ergonomic advantage is a key reason many users preferred the Samsung device for its unique outer display capabilities.

Second, the implementation of the sidebar reduces the effective screen real estate. The dock is positioned on the right side of the display. This placement blocks a significant vertical strip of the 5.4-inch panel. While Apple intended the sidebar to simplify navigation, the result is that a large chunk of the display is essentially left unused for primary content.

Third, the iPhone Duo's approach contrasts sharply with the Galaxy Z Fold 8. When the Fold 8 is configured to use a navigation bar instead of gestures, the wasted space is less obvious. However, for users relying on navigation gestures on the Samsung device, there is very little wasted screen area. The iPhone Duo shrinks the allowed space to stretch media vertically, mimicking a slab device, whereas the Galaxy Z Fold 8 leaves the space free for main content.

The comparison highlights that Apple’s first attempt at a wide foldable software experience leaves room for improvement. Samsung and Google have refined Android for large screens over several years, while iOS is adapting to the form factor for the first time. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 continues to prove successful for Samsung, while the iPhone Duo navigates its initial rollout with limited availability.

The physical design of the iPhone Duo, combined with the software constraints of the fixed dock, creates a user experience that differs from the more open layout of its main competitor. The 15 percent reduction in usable outer screen space is a specific technical detail that distinguishes the device in the current foldable market.
