Liverpool advanced to the Carabao Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday night after defeating Chelsea in a penalty shootout at Anfield.
The 0-0 draw in regulation time masked a tense contest that featured two first-half penalties. Morgan Rogers scored for Chelsea after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moisés Caicedo. Cody Gakpo equalized for Liverpool moments later, converting a spot kick awarded for a handball by Wesley Fofana.
Both managers made substantial lineup changes for the match. Andoni Iraola rotated seven players from the squad that beat Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday. He benched Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Bradley Barcola. Chelsea missed Cole Palmer, who served a one-match suspension following a red card against Tottenham Hotspur. This fixture marked Liverpool's sixth game in a 29-day span.
Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili emerged as the deciding factor during the shootout. He stopped the penalty from Chelsea debutant Emmanuel Emegha. Joe Gomez, who had not scored in 279 previous appearances for the club, fired his kick into the top corner to seal the win. Wesley Fofana then missed his attempt, sending the ball over the bar.
The atmosphere at Anfield remained loud throughout the extra periods. Fans chanted the name of Rio Ngumoha, a former Chelsea player, as he won free kicks. The crowd also applauded Lewis Koumas for a 40-yard sprint that recovered possession from Malo Gusto. Trey Nyoni received a standing ovation when he was substituted late in the second half.
Gomez told ITV that the new management team prioritized fight and grit. He noted that the players continued to push until the final whistle. Iraola highlighted the connection between the squad and the supporters, stating that the group created a strong atmosphere even when trailing.
The victory sets up a quarterfinal match against AFC Bournemouth. Liverpool will face Premier League champions Arsenal at home on Sunday in their next fixture. That game represents a major test for the team under its new head coach.
