Nelson Pires of Providence stood before a judge on Tuesday to face 11 new counts arising from a vehicle pursuit that began in Warwick and ended on Interstate 95.
Police attempted to stop Pires for reckless driving near Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick on Monday afternoon. He accelerated away, initiating a chase that crossed into Providence until his car struck an embankment.
After the collision, Pires punched a Providence detective in the face. He then ran toward I-95, where officers took him into custody.
The Tuesday hearing addressed three separate cases involving Pires. The judge noted that two older files carried active arrest warrants. The third matter involved the 11 new charges from Monday's incident.
"I have three files in front of me today. I will begin with the two oldest, which have arrest warrants against you," the judge said.
Pires has a prior record dating to 2024, when he was charged with placing a minor in danger. His seven-year-old daughter was shot during a dispute that led to two arrests in August 2024. She later died from her injuries.
Court records from that period showed Pires was out on bail in three open cases and on probation in a fourth. On Tuesday, the judge set bail at $10,000 with cash allowed for the new charges. An additional $5,000 with cash allowed was set for one of the pending warrants. No bail was established for the second warrant. Pires remained in custody after the hearing.
