Measles Outbreak: CDC Tallies 4,588 Cases Amid Data Disputes
Federal counts double from last year as Pennsylvania reports five deaths, a figure exceeding the national total recorded by the CDC.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention logged 178 new measles cases in the United States this week, bringing the 2026 total to 4,588. This figure represents more than double the number recorded in 2025. The agency tracks at least 43 active outbreaks across the country.
Pennsylvania leads the nation in reported cases with 1,338 infections. Health officials in the state have confirmed five deaths related to the disease and are investigating a sixth. In contrast, the CDC has recorded only three measles deaths nationally. The federal agency has not specified the location of the third death, creating ambiguity about whether it overlaps with the Pennsylvania counts.
South Carolina and Utah also report significant activity, with both states exceeding 500 cases. Medical experts note that official tallies often undercount the illness because early symptoms, such as rash and fever, may not prompt immediate medical visits. Measles is highly contagious, hospitalizing one in five unvaccinated patients who contract it. One to three people in every 1,000 infected individuals die from complications.
Disagreements over data have drawn scrutiny to federal leadership. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reportedly asked senior CDC officials in September to remove a measles death from the official count after questioning the cause of death, according to Reuters. Critics argue this move lacks transparency during a rising outbreak.
The department is also altering vaccine safety reporting. A proposal announced this week will allow doctors to bill for reporting suspected vaccine injuries through the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System. This change comes after Kennedy dismissed all 17 members of the board that previously evaluated vaccine safety. A court blocked his replacement appointments in March, leaving the panel in flux.
Kennedy has made several public claims regarding vaccines, including statements that the MMR vaccine contains aborted fetal debris and that vitamin A can treat measles. The new data release arrives as the agency continues to manage the worst measles season in years.
The CDC released the updated figures on Friday. State health departments continue to track cases independently, with Pennsylvania’s death toll already surpassing the federal national count by two.
