Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault at Southwark Crown Court in London. The jury of eight men and four women returned guilty verdicts on four of the seven charges against the 51 year old entertainer. They acquitted him of two counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault. The court, which handles serious criminal cases in England and Wales, required unanimous decisions on all charges. The deliberations lasted eight hours and 30 minutes over two days, concluding a trial that spanned approximately four weeks.

Prosecutor Riel Karmy Jones KC, a senior lawyer in the British system, argued that Brand followed a distinct method of targeting women. She described a pattern where initial flattery and compliments were followed by a sudden personality change. The four women whose accounts the jury accepted described this shift in identical terms. They testified that Brand’s eyes changed and his demeanor snapped from charming to frightening and nasty. The prosecutor characterized him as a ruthless and calculating sexual predator who treated women as a disposable commodity and a means to an end. She told the court that the women had nothing to gain except perhaps some closure.

The guilty verdicts included one count of rape involving a young fan from 2009. The jury also convicted Brand of sexual assault in three other incidents. These involved a woman working for MTV in 2004, a woman working at a radio station in 2004 or 2005, and a Channel 4 worker during a filming project in 2009. In the radio station case, the complainant described being pushed against a wall and grabbed. In the Channel 4 case, she testified that she was repulsed when Brand placed his head in her lap. The jury rejected the remaining three counts, which included a rape allegation from a hotel room in Bournemouth in 1999 and an attempted indecent assault at MTV offices in 2001.

Brand’s defense team argued that the encounters were consensual or that the memories had been reimagined over time. His barrister, Ian Winter KC, stated that Brand was not a psychopath who thought rape was normal. Winter argued that living a highly promiscuous life is entirely lawful, regardless of moral views. He suggested the women came forward at the invitation of a 2023 documentary and that journalists had poisoned the well of justice. During his own testimony, Brand told the jury that consent is fundamental and essential. He admitted to being obsessed with sex as a young man but insisted he had never forced anyone.

The judge, Mr Justice Bennathan, remanded Brand in custody, meaning he is held in prison until his sentencing hearing. This is a standard procedure in the UK for serious crimes when bail is denied. The judge noted that Brand faces a custodial sentence of some length. Sentencing is scheduled for Monday, November 9, 2026. Brand’s lawyers asked for bail over the weekend as an act of humanity so he could say goodbye to his three young children. They noted that one child had a birthday that week and that the children were not yet aware of the convictions. The judge refused, stating that while he regretted the hardship to the children, it was caused by the serious criminal offending of their father.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police led the three year investigation into the allegations. He stated that Brand used his influence and fame to prey on and exploit women. Furphy said he hopes the conviction sends a clear message that no one is above the law, no matter how famous or powerful they may be. He praised the extraordinary courage and resilience of the women involved. He also urged anyone who may have been a victim of rape or serious sexual assault to speak to the police, promising they would be listened to with dignity and respect.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Brand is currently under investigation over rape allegations from two more women. These are allegations under active police investigation and have not yet become formal charges. Files for both complainants have been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service. Court documents indicate that one of these allegations involves a woman who says she was 16 when Brand sent a car to collect her from school for sexual encounters. This ongoing investigation highlights the continued scrutiny of the comedian’s past conduct.

Brand appeared in a grey three piece suit and showed no visible emotion as the verdicts were read. He closed his eyes during the reading and looked at his wife, Laura, who sat beside him. He told her he loved her before being led to the cells. As he departed, he made okay gestures to his lawyers and repeatedly stated that he was good. The trial saw evidence from six women, whose identities were kept anonymous. They gave testimony from behind screens to protect their privacy. The jury also viewed police interviews in which Brand read prepared statements denying the incidents.

The case drew attention to the length of time between the alleged offences and the trial. The earliest allegation dated back 27 years, meaning there was no CCTV or forensic evidence to support the claims. The investigation, known as Operation Actinolite, involved taking more than 340 witness statements. One officer was even assigned to read Brand’s books and watch his stand up routines to understand his personality. Brand was interviewed under caution four times during the process. He was first charged in early 2025 and appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court to plead not guilty.
