A 48-hour ceasefire will take effect in a designated sector of Kherson Oblast starting the night of October 27, according to joint announcements from the general staffs of Ukraine and Russia. The pause is designed to facilitate a humanitarian operation in Oleshky, a town currently under Russian occupation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in a video address that the situation in the town is extremely dire. He noted that Russian forces have placed mines on roads within the occupied region, complicating access for supplies and residents.

Zelenskyy expressed hope that American mediation will secure the necessary arrangements. "Ukraine will do its part. We count on American mediation to work," he said. He confirmed that talks have been ongoing at various levels for some time.

The White House announced that First Lady Melania Trump secured the truce between the two nations. The statement described a humanitarian disaster as currently unfolding in Oleshky. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed Russia's agreement to the ceasefire to allow the mission to proceed.

Kyiv aims to restore access to the town, deliver essential food and medicine, and enable residents to leave the combat zone. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, specified that the humanitarian operation is scheduled for October 29.
