New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted a Spanish-language guide on X on Friday that has garnered over 7 million views. The message, directed at residents who encounter Immigration and Customs Enforcement, details legal rights and practical steps for interactions with federal agents. The post quickly became the center of a national political debate.
In the video, Mamdani stated that ICE cannot enter private spaces like homes, schools, or hospitals without a judicial warrant. He emphasized the right to remain silent and described the current situation as frightening for many people. The mayor’s office said the guide was designed to clarify existing legal protections for residents.
Republican leaders responded with swift criticism on social media. Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, questioned why a mayor who became a citizen less than a decade ago is coaching residents in a foreign language. He argued that the message encourages illegal aliens to avoid lawful deportation. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, used a single word to describe the post: "Treason."
Other critics focused on the mayor's stance toward federal enforcement. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, noted that the video does not urge anyone to abide by U.S. laws. He claimed the message was not made for the benefit of the people of the United States. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., added that anyone present illegally is not a New Yorker. Actor Dean Cain called the mayor dangerous and said those here illegally have no reason to fear ICE.
Conservative commentator Tomi Lahren argued that foreign-born Democrats are instructing illegals on how to evade the law. Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton called the statement dangerous incitement filled with disturbing falsehoods. He warned that the advice could put lives in danger. Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s office for comment.
Mamdani has consistently opposed the Trump administration’s immigration-enforcement agenda. During his campaign, he called for abolishing ICE and said the NYPD would not assist with civil immigration enforcement. As mayor, he signed an executive order strengthening New York City’s sanctuary policies. The order directs city agencies to limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities and protect personal information.
The executive order also established protocols for handling ICE requests to access city property or records. It called for expanded "know your rights" materials and training for city employees. Mamdani has described ICE operations as harmful to immigrant communities in the city. The viral post is the latest action in his administration's effort to define the city's relationship with federal immigration enforcement.
