Congressman Keith Self, a Republican representing Texas’s third district, is currently campaigning for a third term while dealing with the fallout from a recent federal arrest. A 17-year-old resident of McKinney was detained by the FBI on October 5, with officials stating the teen allegedly plotted to assassinate the lawmaker. Self’s campaign confirmed the details to reporters, noting that the incident has forced a shift in the congressman’s daily security posture as early voting proceeds across the state.

The congressman’s team did not learn of the detention immediately. Instead, they were informed by U.S. Capitol Police the following day, on October 6. According to the campaign, federal investigators believed the suspect had been radicalized and was under active monitoring. Authorities indicated that the teen was planning a terrorist attack in the name of ISIS. The specific target for this alleged operation was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17, an event expected to draw former Cowboys players and other high-profile guests.

Self described his reaction to the news as measured, citing his extensive military background. He noted that previous deployments to combat zones prepared him for such scenarios. While acknowledging that many people would panic upon learning someone was trying to kill them, Self said he remained relatively calm because the arrest had already occurred. His primary concern was determining whether the suspect was a lone wolf or part of a larger network. He stated that his wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also understood the gravity of the situation and took it seriously.

The congressman admitted that he has received threats in the past, but this incident marked a different level of severity. He explained that while prior threats were noted, none had resulted in an arrest. The fact that federal agents had moved to detain the suspect signaled a more serious threat to his safety. Self’s campaign manager emphasized that the team increased their situational awareness and profile immediately after learning of the plot, though Self noted he already maintained a solid security detail.

Despite the alleged plan to strike during the October 17 fundraiser, Self attended the event as planned. He described the day as delightful and noted that nothing unexpected occurred. He reported judging 19 different chilies and three pots of beans without incident. Since then, he has continued his campaign activities, including poll greeting sessions, where he remains vigilant about his surroundings. He expressed his intention to keep working to inform voters about his political views, stating that the threat would not deter him from doing his job.

The timing of the arrest coincides with Self’s vocal opposition to Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing the practice and opposing its implementation in the United States. The resolution asserts that the U.S. Constitution remains the supreme law of the land. This stance has been a prominent part of his platform as he seeks reelection.

Local context also plays a role in the district’s political landscape. McKinney, where the suspect resides, is part of Self’s congressional district. The area has seen significant debate regarding plans for a new mosque. In August, the McKinney City Council unanimously approved a site plan for expansion at a local mosque, stating the plans complied with city development rules. That vote followed hours of contentious public comment and was subsequently followed by an effort to recall several council members.

Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the upcoming midterm election, also responded to the news. He condemned the alleged assassination plot in a post on social media, highlighting the bipartisan nature of the shock surrounding the event. The identity of the 17-year-old has not been publicly released, as the investigation remains ongoing.

Reporters have reached out to the FBI Dallas office for further clarification on the case, but a response has not yet been received. The lack of an official statement from the bureau leaves some details of the investigation unclear. For now, the focus remains on the ongoing campaign and the safety measures implemented for the congressman.

As the election cycle progresses, the incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by candidates in high-profile races. Self’s decision to continue campaigning openly suggests a strategy of resilience, aiming to show voters that the threat has not disrupted his ability to serve. The coming weeks will likely see continued scrutiny on both the security protocols and the political implications of the alleged plot.
