Halloween in Bellevue, Washington, turned into a heated street dispute when a father discovered religious literature in his son's trick-or-treat bag.
The incident was captured on video and shared by journalist Jonathan Choe on November 1.
The clip has been viewed more than 129,000 times since its release.
The unidentified middle-aged man stood outside the home of his neighbors and shouted at the family.
His young son sat quietly in the car while the father yelled profanities and made hand gestures at the adults.
The neighbor family had handed out bags of candy along with a yellow pamphlet.
The pamphlet featured a pumpkin graphic with the words “Jesus loves you so much.”
Inside the bag, a note explained the concept of sin and stated that Jesus died to pay the penalty for those sins.
It also included a prayer for salvation and the Bible verse from John 3:16 on the back.
The father told the Mail in a written statement that he did not want people preaching on a holiday dedicated to children receiving candy.
He said his children were upset about receiving the items and that the situation felt wrong to him.
He described the outburst as irrational but admitted to feeling angry at the family for imposing their faith on others during the holiday season. The father accused the neighbors of using candy to attract children and then telling them Jesus is the truth. He said the approach felt like grooming to him. During the video, he mocked the crucifixion and called the deity in the sky fictitious. He told the family to go worship Christ since he died for their sins. The father acknowledged he felt like a jerk after the incident but maintained his core grievance remained unchanged. He added that he believed the neighbors were proselytizing inappropriately on a day meant for kids. The online reaction to the video was mixed, with many users on X suggesting the father could have simply thrown the pamphlet in the trash to avoid the confrontation. The neighbors did not issue a formal public response to the specific accusations of grooming in the available records.
