Concrete barriers have been removed from crosswalks on West Colorado Avenue in Colorado Springs, ending the initial phase of a street redesign that began last month.

The city’s capital improvements manager, Ryan Phipps, confirmed the removals as part of an ongoing trial process. He stated that the adjustments reflect a continuous cycle of testing what works and what does not.

Public feedback drove the specific changes to the infrastructure. Residents reported that the temporary concrete walls blocked their view of oncoming traffic. Phipps noted that this issue was particularly acute for pedestrians of shorter stature who could not see over the solid barriers.

First responders also influenced the final layout. Drivers attempting to yield to emergency vehicles were creating blockages at the center pedestrian refuge areas. The city reduced the size of these refuges to guarantee that fire and police units maintain clear access along the corridor.

Phipps characterized the modifications as a balancing act rather than a correction of errors. He emphasized that the test phase is essential for evaluating how the design functions in real-world conditions.

Local businesses are monitoring the shifts closely. Joe Kliche, manager of Centennial Cuts, a Colorado beef retailer on the avenue, noted that the store is in its third generation of family ownership in Fowler. He said the new center lane parking is useful for loading, though he described the remaining street stanchions as unusual. His team had anticipated more additional parking spaces and remains divided on the crosswalk updates.

Planners are now soliciting further public input to determine if the current configuration meets the needs of drivers and pedestrians alike.
