249 dollars is the cost of two accessories that Apple’s new foldable iPhone Duo requires for its most advertised features. The device launched today without a power adapter in the box and relies on a separate stylus purchase to unlock its drawing capabilities. These mandatory extras push the effective entry price for a fully functional setup well above the base hardware cost.
The iPhone Duo supports the Apple Pencil for the first time in the company’s history. Users can write notes and sketch on both the inner and outer displays. Apple stated that the design drew on the proportions of a standard A-series paper notebook. The feature activates via the iOS 27.2 update arriving next week. Only the Apple Pencil with a USB-C connector is compatible. The device is listed at $69, a reduction from its previous $79 price tag.
Fast charging performance also depends on a separate purchase. The phone can reach 50 percent charge in approximately 20 minutes, but only with a suitable power adapter. The retail box includes a USB-C cable but no charger, mirroring the packaging strategy for recent iPhone models. While many owners may already possess a 20W adapter, tech site 9to5Mac recommends the Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max at $34. Anker’s 100W USB-C charger with a five-foot cable is another option at $29.
Additional recommended accessories include cases and mounting solutions. ESR’s MagSafe Car Mount, which clips to an air vent, is priced at $19. This device allows the phone to display step-by-step directions on its larger screen while CarPlay manages navigation on the vehicle’s display. Case options range from third-party brands to Apple’s own line. The SPIDERCASE Magnetic Case with a built-in stand costs $29. Apple’s Folio with Kickstand is priced at $129.
The Duo’s StandBy mode now functions without the phone being connected to a charger. This update allows users to view Home Camera and Home Modular interfaces. These views provide access to smart home accessories, including security cameras. 9to5Mac suggests the Aqara G100 2K camera at $39 and a eufy 4K camera at $69 as compatible models for this feature.
AirPods Pro 3 are also on the recommended list for users upgrading their audio equipment. The wireless earbuds are currently available on sale at Amazon for $199, down from their standard $249 price. The recommendation cites the device’s noise cancellation capabilities as a benefit for work environments.
The total cost of the primary functional add-ons, the stylus and the high-speed charger, reaches $103. Including the recommended car mount and a mid-tier case brings the accessory total to $151. Adding a security camera for the StandBy mode features pushes the additional spending to $190. The $249 figure cited in the opening refers to the combined cost of the stylus and the specific high-wattage Apple charger recommended for optimal performance.
