Anthropic’s Early Investors See Valuations Soar Ahead of Potential $2 Trillion Listing
Early backers of the AI lab are already holding multi-billion dollar stakes at current private valuations, with potential gains set to rise further if the company goes public at its projected market cap.

The race to capitalize on artificial intelligence is producing some of the most dramatic financial windfalls in recent venture history. As Anthropic prepares for a public listing expected later this year, the stakes for its investors are already staggering. Even before the official IPO, the company’s latest private valuation of $965 billion means that early and late-stage backers are sitting on billions in equity. If the listing proceeds at the anticipated valuation of up to $2 trillion, these gains could expand significantly, creating a landmark event for both the tech sector and its financial supporters.
One of the most notable early bets was made by Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt participated in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, when the startup was valued at just $461 million. That early entry point has allowed his position to grow substantially. He currently holds approximately 1% of the company, a stake that is worth nearly $10 billion at the current private valuation, illustrating the explosive growth potential of the AI sector.
Late-stage institutional investors have also seen massive returns, particularly those who entered the market when valuations were already high. Iconiq, an investment outfit, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was valued at $183 billion. That significant late-stage bet has appreciated to a current value of $17 billion. Analysts suggest this position has the potential to double in value if the IPO prices at the higher end of the projected range.
Menlo Ventures, which led Anthropic’s Series D funding round, has invested over $1 billion in the company over time. This cumulative investment has resulted in a stake now valued at $14 billion. Similarly, Sequoia, a prominent venture capital firm, entered the fold earlier this year when Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. Their $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial outlay in a relatively short period.
Individuals and smaller firms have also reaped substantial rewards. Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. The firm subsequently added another $400 million to its position. This combined investment has grown into a stake worth billions today. Notably, Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, though the original investment remains a significant asset.
Perhaps the most dramatic multiple return belongs to Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the company’s valuation was $5 billion. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion. This trajectory highlights how early board-level involvement and timely funding can lead to exceptional financial outcomes in the AI space.
The context of these valuations underscores the rapid escalation in AI market prices over the last few years. From a $461 million valuation in 2021 to a potential $2 trillion listing in 2026, the growth curve is steep. For New York and New Jersey readers, this reflects the broader financial momentum behind AI technology, where early risk-taking is being rewarded with historic returns. As the IPO date approaches, these figures will serve as a benchmark for the market’s appetite for the leading AI labs.
